Inside Options Orderflow

How to read the footprint.

What each mark shows, how to read an imbalance and a stack of them, and how the footprint sits beside the chart’s key levels.

01
The footprint

Bought and sold, price by price.

Each candle carries a bar for every stock price band it traded through, and a cell in the strip under it.

Buyers vs sellers by price

See where option premium was bought or sold within the candle.

  • Net option buying is a solid blue bar and net option selling a solid orange bar; the figure on each bar is premium bought minus sold.
  • Bars share one scale across the candles in view, so equal imbalances draw equally.
  • Rows set the band size, or Auto picks one that stays readable; each price label marks the start of its band.

Bought vs sold, candle by candle

Read each candle’s balance in the strip under the candles.

  • A blue cell marked + means more premium was bought than sold, an orange cell marked − that more was sold.
  • A faint grey cell means no clear side: neither reached 60% of the premium bought and sold.
  • Hover, tap or focus a cell for its figures, or select a candle for its price ladder and its contracts ranked by premium.
02
Imbalances & stacks

Read the imbalance. Then the stack.

Longer bars and deeper cells mark where one side outweighed the other.

Imbalances

Compare the two sides at each price and in each candle.

  • A bar’s length is its band’s imbalance, premium bought minus premium sold, against the largest one in view.
  • A strip cell’s shading grows with its candle’s imbalance, against the largest among the candles in the plot.
  • Mid-quote fills, multi-leg trades and trades without a usable quote stay unclassified: they count in every total, never in the bars.

Stacked levels

Look for neighbouring bands that lean the same way.

  • When several neighbouring bands in one candle lean the same way, their bars stack into a column of one color.
  • A stack shows where in the candle’s range the buying or selling sat: near its high, near its low or all through it.
  • Stacks describe the trades in the session; they don’t say where price goes next.
03
Beside the key levels

Read the trades at the levels.

Put the footprint next to the chart’s Ceiling, Floor and Flip Line.

Next to the chart

Keep the footprint and the price chart on one dashboard.

  • Add Options Orderflow beside the price chart; Sync follows the chart’s timeframe and shares its cursor.
  • Compare the trades in a price band with the Ceiling (call wall), Floor (put wall) and Flip Line (gamma flip) on the chart.
  • Switch the view to group the same trades at option strikes, or to bearish and bullish premium by strike.

What the sides mean

Know what a blue or orange bar does and doesn’t tell you.

  • Bought means the trade filled at or near the ask, and sold at or near the bid: the side is inferred, not reported.
  • Bought and sold describe the trade, not a view on the stock: a bought put is a purchase that leans bearish.
  • The levels and the regime are model estimates, and the footprint describes activity, not advice.
Using Options Orderflow

Questions about the footprint.

What is an options order flow footprint?

A footprint chart shows the trading inside each candle, price by price. Options Orderflow places each option trade at the stock price reported with it and shows, for each price band, whether more option premium was bought or sold.

How are trades classified as bought or sold?

By where each trade filled against the quote: at or near the ask counts as bought, at or near the bid as sold. Mid-quote fills, multi-leg and complex trades, and trades without a usable quote stay unclassified; their premium counts in every total but not in the bars.

Does net buying mean the flow was bullish?

Not on its own. Bought and sold describe the trade: a bought call leans bullish and a bought put leans bearish. The Directional view shows bearish and bullish premium by strike.

Which expirations and timeframes can I study?

One expiry at a time: the latest session’s 0DTE expiry, or the nearest listed one, by default. Candles run from 1 minute to 4 hours for the latest trading session.
